With Kate about to deliver the royal baby, Chris Froome winning the Tour de France, and Andy Murray winning this year’s Wimbledon, it seems timely to share my most recent finish, the Jack Attack quilt. It is shown here in front of the new East Wing of the St. Louis Art Museum, which was designed by British architect David Chipperfield.

For the back, I used a bandana print that I have had stashed for several years, and I tucked in a 1/4-yard London-themed piece that was too small to use in the quilt itself.

I bound it with a bright blue floral fabric.

Lynn Peterson did an outstanding job long-arm quilting this beast of a quilt. Look at all of the fun motifs and patterns.

I have a thing for the Oh Deer fabric collection by Moda. Cool swirls by Lynn.

jack attack quilt–sashing complete

IMG_1739My Jack Attack quilt top is complete!

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I bulked up the center red cross and the white sashing bordering it, which is why it looks a little different from the quilt in the Jack Attack tutorial.

IMG_1742Given its size (74″ x 102″), there was no way to hang this quilt top to photograph it, so I rearranged furniture and onto the floor it went. Bud slept in the recliner during the photo shoot.

IMG_1743I bought  this red crown fabric last summer. It would have been perfect for one of the flags, but I had only 1/2 yard–bummer.

IMG_1744

In the end, it worked well as cornerstones in the sashing–serendipitous!

IMG_1691I finished the third Union Jack today. I like the prancing deer. On to the sashing . . .

Second Union Jack flag finished–one more to go!

jack attack quilt–with a little help from my friend

The Union Jack motif is a personal favorite (see needlepoint keychain). From trolling quilting blogs and Flickr, I was familiar with the Jack Attack quilt tutorial by Lynne Goldsworthy of Lily’s Quilts, but I was intimidated by the angles. I was unsure if I could figure out the tutorial on my own. When my experienced quilter friend, Nancy, offered to guide me through, I was psyched–woohoo!

I played it safe with my fabric choices. I was inspired by this quilt I saw on Flickr, with its funky take on the traditional blue and red.

I veered from the pattern in the widths of the center red cross (mine: finished 6 inches) and of the white bands that border it (mine: finished 2 inches). I went with the beefier widths because (1) this quilt is for a double bed and (2) I thought I’d try to make the motif more in keeping with the actual proportions of the Union Jack flag. Seeing my flag now, I am glad that I bulked those elements up, but when I make this quilt next, I will go twin size and use the dimensions given in the tutorial.

One flag down, two to go . . .
