Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

hedgehog fix

IMG_1371Daughter #1 is off to southern California to visit a college roommate and her family for spring break–lucky duck. She thought a personalized pillowcase would make a nice hostess gift–and while I was at it, could I please make pillowcases for her other close college friends as well? We shopped for fabric while she was home for a long weekend. Bright flowers for Phoebe, squirrels for Hillary, hipster granny for Annie.

IMG_1372 Daughter #1 has a current fixation on hedgehogs: wouldn’t one make a great pet? Rather than have her bring a live one home (which I am sure the dog and cats would consider a tasty chew toy), I thought this cute fabric (from the Outfoxed collection by Lizzy House for Andover Fabrics) might satisfy her obsession enough to keep her urge in check. Since she already has a few personalized pillowcases, I decided to leave her name off this one.

edelweiss keychain

IMG_1366To celebrate the 16th birthday of her running partner and pit orchestra friend, Daughter #2 and I collaborated on yet another keychain design. It had to have some yellow and should be clean and bright–and wouldn’t it be nice to incorporate some little flowers? Edelweiss anyone?

So we came up with this little pattern. Its subdued palette and sweet stylized flowers (although not white) suggest retroSound of Music.

Happy Birthday, Susanna!

birthday boxers

IMG_1353Daughter #2 turned 16 last weekend, so as a gift at her request, I made boxers for her and her friends. I used ikat fabric I bought at a good price at Hancock’s.

IMG_1357To make these classic five-panel boxers, I used adult and kid patterns for First Choice Boxers by Timber Lane Press. (I bought these patterns at Jackman’s Fabrics, but you can find them online on Amazon.) For four pair, I made the kid large; for the rest I made adult small. Garment sewing is not intuitive for me, but the pattern directions are clear and well illustrated. I always consider it a success when my finished project looks like the pattern picture! It was the first time I used sports elastic–it worked out well. I had also never done flat-felled seams before. I like the way they cleanly finish a seam. I got lots of practice: six flat-felled seams per boxer times 8!

IMG_1354I stamped the girls’ names on the elastic so they could tell whose are whose.

IMG_1360The girls like the authentic baggy seat of these boxers. They are the real deal! I’ll be using these patterns again–these boxers make great gifts.

IMG_1349Here’s to good friends.
